In Boa Vista, as well as on Sal, kite surfing champions soar over the waves. Some athletes competing in the kite surfing world championships train here. The island is an international stage for water sports, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, wave surfing, and hydrofoiling.
Water sports for champions and dreamers
In addition to kitesurfing, which is currently all the rage, with many qualified centers, expert instructors, and master classes (like that of Cape Verdean world champion and four-time runner-up, Matchu Lopes), hydrofoiling is gaining traction. It seems easy to watch them challenge the waves on a board with a rudder and a strange sail controlled by their hands! And then there's wave surfing —it's still the ocean—and sometimes the "tubes" are truly thrilling, then stand-up paddleboarding, and the more classic windsurfing.

On the beaches of Estoril and Carlota, there are several centers offering lessons, rentals, and storage for windsurfing, kitesurfing, hydrofoiling, SUP, and surfing equipment. You can also attend masterclasses with champions! Ask for more information.
Plus, kayaks and canoes are available for rent to reach the picturesque islet, Ilheu de Sal Rei , independently. Alternatively, you can get there on guided kayak excursions, for snorkeling, and a visit to the Bragança Fort, with expert commentary.

It's beautiful to swim among colorful fish like parrotfish, observing moray eels, lobsters, and pufferfish, preparing for unexpected encounters with green turtles, hawksbill turtles, and loggerhead sea turtles. For those who want to try freediving or scuba diving, several specialized diving centers offer it. Discover a flora and fauna that ranges from tropical to Mediterranean, and if you're lucky, you might even spot large fish, including whale sharks.
